South Carolina Rent/Mortgage Moratorium

Mutual Aid of the Midlands is calling upon Governor McMaster and the South Carolina State Legislature to impose an immediate moratorium on rent and mortgage payments so that the people of South Carolina do not experience instability with their housing and/or business ownership due to inability to pay rent and/or mortgage payments as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are also calling on Mayor Benjamin and Columbia City Council to pass a Resolution if the state fails to act, as well as urge the state to do what is needed for its residents.
We understand that the state is beginning to reopen its economy, but household economies are still not stable for many South Carolinians. In the last seven weeks, over 450,000 residents filed for unemployment. Many individuals are still unable to return to work or return to work full time. For some, safety is not a priority in their workplace and returning may not be the best option for them and their family.
We also understand that property owners and mortgage lenders have to make a living as well. We are not proposing a complete cancellation of payments, but believe that this is a great opportunity to follow human-centered practices. It is also a great opportunity to show true collaboration between the public sector, the private sector, and those most in need.
For a great example, please see the passed resolution from Boone Town Council here.
