Improve CSU's Chemistry Department and CHEM343 Class
This petition was made to demonstrate the general disappointment regarding Colorado State University's Chemistry Department. It is a commonly held belief among students that this department does not host an environment that fosters a relationship of success among students; this is the second petition that has had to be made in order to voice student concerns.
Our issue specifically pertains to the Modern Organic Chemistry II course (CHEM343) and the new professor- Garrett Miyake. Students are having an overwhelming difficult time understanding material and succeeding in the course due to lack in sufficient and helpful instructional strategies and support.
The averages of the first two exams have been a 45% and a 46%. These averages are not just reflective of student performance, but largely reflects back on how the class is being taught. Most students have put in hours upon hours studying for both midterms by doing practice problems, assigned homework, reading the textbook, attending office hours, attending study groups, going to university-hosted tutoring, and watching supplemental videos. This extreme effort from students is not being reflected in our grades. We are not paying a tremendous amount of money to attend an institution that cannot supply a professor who does not properly instruct or support his students.
The majority of the class feels they have exhausted our resources at this point in time, so we are calling for these changes:
- Implementation of better instruction and teaching methods
- Either via a new professor or other options like dropping the class, refunds, etc.
- Adding a curve for low exam averages
- Responsibility taken by Professor Miyake
- A better system for reporting issues and voicing concerns to the Chemistry Department
