Why this petition matters

Started by Emma Stokes

Countless children every year are sent to different forms of “Attachment therapy” by their oblivious adopted parents. The goal of this therapy is to “break children down so that they are forced to trust adults.” Children are coaxed into contracts of receiving therapy for something called Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD). This therapy can include things such as Holding Therapy, where the child sits on a “therapeutic parent’s” lap, usually a male therapist, and is forced to face “trauma” that was supposedly caused by their biological parents. These exercises violently trigger traumatic memories and even twist memories to fit what the therapist wants them to believe. Often, these kids (mostly ages 5-17) overly medicated with a concoction of strong antipsychotics. If the child does not sign the contract to endure this type of therapy, they are sent to a home to live at, much like I experienced.
In June-July of 2019, I was sent to the Institute for Attachment and Child Development (IACD). While I did not experience holding therapy, their methods of “healing” were insanely inhumane. I had no say in anything as I lived in Texas and one day I was told “you will be going to Colorado tomorrow for help”. When I arrived to the main office, I was informed that I would not be allowed to have anything except for a few outfits. My adopted parents say their goodbyes and then leave.
I am shortly escorted to a minivan with 3 other kids: a 7 year old boy, a 15year old boy, and a 16 year old girl who was my age at the time. An older lady gets in the van and explains that there is to be no talking, and we are not to look at each other at all. I may only look out the window.
we arrive after a 2 hour drive to a small house in the mountains. More rules were explained: I was to stay at a desk facing the wall, and only am allowed to say “yes mama” or “no mama” when spoken to. We had 5 unprompted questions we could ask per day, including “may I use the bathroom?”
At 6:00pm we were sent to our tiny rooms and stayed until we were called out. The next day would be the same thing. 3 days a week we traveled to the Main office for therapy, which was the child getting told by two therapist and their parents everything they were doing wrong. I was never allowed to talk in therapy. some other things that were cruel while in this home were the rules for outside. I had to “walk the circle driveway” for an hour no matter the weather, we were way over fed to the point of throwing up, and give raw uncooked meat at one point. I was supposed to be there for 7 months. I ran away successfully after 3 weeks.
Though I did not have the worst of what a lot of children experience with attachment therapy, I want to do everything in my power to end all forced therapy for kids who are diagnosed with Reactive Attachment Disorder. We need to spread awareness and support these children, not send them away. If a child experiences trauma from their biological family, wouldn’t the best thing for them be unrelenting love and unconditional support? That’s what adoption is about... saving children from an environment that would be detrimental to their success. Please come along side me and stand up for the children who cannot stand up for themselves.
