The CO4KIDS website states that "Foster parents provide a safe, temporary home for children and youth whose parents or caregivers are unable to care for them." What happens when that home is not safe and children are placed in more or equally dangerous situations as before. Children are constantly dropped into a foster home after foster home because caseworkers have to simply find a place for them without thoroughly checking the safety of the home. This is a serious problem because foster homes are supposed to be a safe and loving place for children so they do not have to fear continual abuse and neglect or whatever happened with their biological parents/caregivers. Statistics show that about 28% of kids are abused in the foster care system and an article done by The Intercept found in a study conducted about the MENTOR Network (the largest private provider of foster care services) that about 1,600 children die to abuse and neglect in foster care. This is unacceptable, children's safety and lives should never be compromised for the money or responsibility to for-profit foster care organizations. The fact that this continues to happen is because these cases and deaths are not being investigated and the children are scared into not speaking their voice. Coming from someone who was in the foster care system, I know the fear and pain that comes with abuse and neglect and it hurts me to see that most children never experience love and safety as I have. To make a change, to ensure all foster kids get the safe homes they deserve, I believe we should have advocacy and accountability. We must have advocates to make sure children are presented with quality foster parents who have had background checks, training, resources, etc. Policies and regulations need to be changed so that states and for-profit and non-profit organizations are held accountable for every decision they make and the consequences that come with them. Having both these simple concepts will create a positive relationship between the child, foster parent/parents, and organization, with communication and resources being spread to all three. This change does not take millions of dollars or new laws, it is simple and critical to the safety and lives of all foster kids.
