This petition was started to try and get a message across to the University of Lafayette. The school opened back up for class a day after Hurricane Ida hit and destroyed so much of our beautiful state. Neighboring universities have shut down and expressed their concern and condolences for their students and students families who have been affected by the storm. Even though Lafayette did not get as much damage as other places, does not mean our students and their families residences in their hometowns were not affected. Some lost everything they owned and some cannot even get back or stay in Louisiana because of the damages. It's extremely inconsiderate for the University to asks us to put school above our mental health and safety during this detrimental time. Many who want to go and help their families cleanup, recover, or just be there with their loved ones cannot because we have class. Asking students to also get on zoom if they cannot come in person isn't showing sympathy either when most families don't have power, cell service, or even water right now. Signing this petition is to bring awareness to selfish decision that was made and hopefully get the university to give us break or close down temporarily so we can help and be with our families right now. There is nothing more important than that, not even school.
