All students attending SUNY COLLEGE OLDWESTBURY should be given a guaranteed passing grade as compensation for the displacement of classes to an online environment due to the novel Coronavirus on the contingency that students prove to their professor that they are engaged and looking to learn. Grading the students on their work when its being assigned in environments that do not support learning is unfair to the students as the quality of their work will suffer because of a myriad of reasons.

The faculty doesn't even agree within itself in terms of the actions to take in regards to online classes. Some have made minimal changes to their syllabus while others are already granting a guaranteed pass on the condition that students come to zoom lectures, submit some written assignments, and learn something overall. Why do students have to focus on getting C's or B's depending on what program they are in for that class to count towards degree progress, when their parents are unemployed, they are forced to grapple with mental health problems, and the US has had some of the worst stock market days in history.

Anxiety, depression, ADHD and other mental health concerns are effective at preventing students from progressing already in face-to-face classes so how can those students be expected to continue the year online and earn C's? The students did not cause this pandemic and our mental and physical well-being should be at the forefront during this global pandemic. People are already using their savings and can't afford rent, why must students focus on redundant homework assignments and exams when their world is crashing around them? Some students do not have access to WiFi that is stable enough to take exams, what should those students do? SUNY Old Westbury students have been uprooted from their routines, lost jobs, are worried about their children and families, some are not even sure about their living arrangements, and fear about personal health is prevalent now more than ever.
