HC Fossil Free calls upon our campus community to preserve the integrity of the College's Jesuit mission by supporting complete divestment from the top 200 coal, oil, and gas companies, and reinvestment in renewable energy alternatives

There are many approaches to addressing climate change, but divestment presents a unique opportunity for Holy Cross to serve as a leader in higher education, the Catholic Church, and the climate justice movement.

  • Structural change: Divestment is a tactic for social change that targets the root of the problem of climate change--an economy that runs on dirty, non-renewable energy sources while forsaking people and the planet in the process. This system is also deeply undemocratic, giving a small number of individuals and corporations the power to determine the fate of billions of people.
  • Moral call: Human-induced climate change poses an urgent threat to both our shared environment and the lives of current and future generations. Therefore, we believe that it is wrong to profit from the companies who encourage this degradation and prevent real solutions to climate change through their heavy influence in politics and the economy. Our investments conflict with the Catholic call to care for our common home and undermine the College’s efforts towards environmental sustainability and social justice.
  • Jesuit identity: Catholic higher education was founded to examine culture and find ways to advance the common good, and this responsibility extends beyond the classroom and into the realm of our investments and how we exercise our moral and social power beyond our own gates. Holy Cross's Jesuit identity urges us to prophetically witness to the Gospel message in light of the injustice of climate change.

Above all, the College’s continued investment in fossil fuel industries endorses the companies which compromise the safety of our shared planet, and largely to the detriment of marginalized communities. Our silence renders us bystanders to the global climate crisis, complicit in the very realities that we deplore in our classrooms, boardrooms, and College mission statement. We need to raise our voices during this crucial moment in our history.
