The majority of the UK is now in Tier 4 with ‘major incidents’ declared in some counties. We’re pushing for the College to move us into the ‘Red Phase’. Whereby routine care would be suspended and only face to face essential, urgent or emergency eyecare would be put in place.

The current Amber Phase allows routine patients to book appointments. But does a routine test fall under the government ‘stay at home’ order? To only leave home for essential purposes? If a routine appointment is not essential, surely they should not be coming in and can be managed via telephone consultation.

Our profession is already one of the highest risk professions, with these new figures exceeding the first lockdown and the increased transmissibility, we’d expect the ‘Red Phase’ must now come into effect. In this pandemic where sadly the government have been reactive, we feel obliged to voice our opinion on our professional bodies not letting us down, being proactive and protecting the public where non-essential appointments are not necessary.
