On October 16, 2017, Ontario’s full-time faculty of 24 public colleges went on strike to support the contract faculty who are paid only for the time they are in the classroom. This does not include compensation for lesson planning or marking.
We, the students of these 24 Ontario colleges, support the union’s right to strike. However, our fall semester has been irreversibly compromised. Some colleges have proposed shortening the winter break and cancelling the winter reading week. This will hinder students’ plans to travel or visit family during these times. Not to mention, students in precarious financial situations rely on these scheduled breaks to gain more hours of employment.
The Ontario colleges are considering condensing four weeks of missed learning and midterm exams into two weeks, in lieu of a longer winter break and winter reading week. Though we do not question our faculties’ ability to teach a condensed course, we did not enroll in this semester (and pay the full tuition fee) for a course that will only last approximately nine weeks.
We, the students have been out of the classroom for just as long as we were in. We request that the executives and deans of these 24 Ontario colleges consider reimbursing all of our fall tuition.
