Java is an exceptionally powerful and prevalent programming language, yet it should not be the language of choice for an introductory AP high school course in computer science. Currently, Python is one of the top 10 fastest growing languages to know, and for good reason. Python constructs are more concise and less complicated. While Java has evolved over the past few releases, it is still a verbose programming language. Python can be used to build just about anything. Professionally, Python is great for data analysis, backend web application development, AI, and scientific computing. Many developers in the industry have also used Python to build productivity tools, games, and desktop apps, so there are plenty of resources to help students learn the fundamentals of those areas as well outside the curriculum once they have formally learned the fundamentals in a classroom environment. Code readability and formatting are both naturally elegant in Python. I am confident that changing the core AP language from Java to Python will allow high school students to learn faster and easier and be more excited at understanding what they can accomplish with technology and computers.
