Charulata Biswal started this petition to District Magistrate - Puri

Our village Gudalaba is a small village of farmers and fisherfolk near the Sufi shrine of Pir Jahania just 200mtr away from the sea. A thick forest of Casuarinas separates the sea from the village. To the north of the village is a network of creeks of Devi River which meets the Bay of Bengal at Sahana. It’s a nature’s paradise, the beach is also part of the rookery of Olive Ridley Turtles. So our village witnesses hundreds of tourists in a week. While it makes us happy, villagers also get means of livelihood by putting shops near beach side. But it is also equally frustrating for us to find plastic garbage starting from single use plastic bottles, chips/chocolates/biscuit wrappers, paper/plastic cup/glass/plates etc throughout the shore. As I mentioned above, our village and the beach come under an eco-sensitive zone and its one of the very few safe nesting coast for olive Ridley turtles.

We are a group of 75 women – Pir Jahania Mahila Bana Suraksha Samiti are working tirelessly from last twenty years in creating forests, and to protect it from timber mafia. And we are successfully conserved our forest. The recent Fani cyclone has least impact on our village as this forest protected us. But we are now threatened by the erratic behavior of tourists who come to our villages to have fun and make our lives miserable. They leave their thrash and mostly single use plastic in our beaches and village roads. We regularly clean the beaches. But now we are tired. How long we will keep cleaning others garbage. We don’t want them in our village and beach if they are coming with these plastics.

We are requesting to create a toll booth at the entrance of village Pir Jahania Beach and Gundalba village. Tourists have to deposit all their plastic items at the Plastic Toll Booth. They can collect them while returning. Global warming and climate change is already here and a threat to our planet. We will not tolerate anymore.

If not now, then never. Help us in creating this Plastic Toll Booth and save our beach, turtles, deer and other animals.
