A large group of parents are looking to explore the possibility of supporting students with distance learning with the assistance of assigned teachers and/or Ed Techs.   Here are a few ideas we are proposing for the upcoming school year:

• Teachers who are high risk or have requested to teach from home due to having small children will be assigned to a distance learning “class.”  Children will receive instruction via Google Meets daily with their teacher as opposed to watching the teacher teach a live class. This will give a more intimate setting for the students and allow them to openly ask questions or seek assistance while online.   It relieves pressure for teachers to simultaneously teach a live class and tend to students in an online setting.

• We would like to propose that the schools help match parents for distance learning based on days the parent areavailable and any special needs of the student.  Many families would like to go to full distance-learning but are unable to due to their work schedule.  However, if parents can find 1 or 2 days a week that they could host a small group of students, more children could have the option of fully remote learning while parents can still fulfill their work obligations.  This would also alleviate stress for families and students in the in the future if school has to completely shut down again.  The distance learning “classes” can be formed around a similar work schedule for the parents or special needs of the kids.  One “remote” teacher would be assigned to the group so the students are not all on separate distance learning schedules.  This alleviates any burdens the family may have if a parent becomes ill or their work schedule changes.  Their child could continue their distance learning program without interruption.  This small group of children would alternate through the available parent for each week with the supervision of the same teacher.  Group size would remain small.

• Ed Techs could be used to assist with distance learning difficulties or special needs children who may need more assistance.  They could meet with the child/family in a central location or do home visits.

• Other ideas include devising competitions or group learning projects that work more as a community via Zoom.  Having students write a daily newspaper with each group responsible for a section and then have another group write the next section.

We have the ability to teach kids via distance learning in fun and creative ways.  Many parents have to choose in-person learning only due to work schedules.  Several parents are conflicted because they do not want their children in school but struggle to find a way to balance distance learning.   Even the hybrid model poses many logistical complications for families.  Parents should not have to choose between increasing their families’ risk of Covid-19 and keeping their job.  We can work collaboratively and come up with solutions so parents can keep their children home if they choose. We can set up necessary supports to give each student a better learning experience.

We are hopeful to have a collaborative discussion with parents and the school administration to find solutions to what may be a long year of distance learning.
