Patton turkey farm & slaughterhouse is bad for everyone — our community, the environment, and animals. We are asking Patton to close all animal farm & slaughter operations, and transition to an entirely plant-based food system, for the safety and sustainability of our community.
Patton Farms Inc. is an industrial turkey farm & slaughterhouse that will begin production in Kelowna late 2020 or early 2021. This is extremely concerning due to the devastating impact it will have on public health and the environment; and how it will undermine our struggles against inequality, injustice, and violence.
VIOLENT CRIMES - Local crime rates increase significantly, especially violent crimes against less powerful groups (like women & children), wherever and whenever slaughterhouses open. Source: Amy J Fitzgerald, Linda Kalof, and Thomas Dietz. (2009). Slaughterhouses and Increased Crime Rates: An Empirical Analysis of the Spillover From “The Jungle” Into the Surrounding Community.
PANDEMICS - Animal farms & slaughterhouses are breeding grounds for pandemic disease outbreaks, such as the swine flu, bird flu, and coronavirus. Blood, feces, and feathers are plastered all over turkey farms & slaughterhouses, posing a serious public safety & health threat by exposing communities to infectious diseases. "3 out of every 4 new or emerging infectious diseases in people come from animals" - Center for Disease Control
ENVIRONMENT: Turkey manure contains heavy metals & pathogens, which contaminate soils leading to species loss, vegetation damage, and increases in greenhouse gases. Runoff from turkey farms and slaughterhouses devastate surface & groundwater, making both animals and humans sick when present in drinking water. Ammonia emitting from turkey farms often cause eye & lung irritation to nearby residents. Patton is situated near orchards and homes, posing a significant environmental & health threat to the nearby community.
HUMAN RIGHTS: Slaughterhouse workers are disproportionately marginalized people from immigrant communities and other folks with few employment options. They are 3X more likely to suffer serious injuries, like amputations, second-degree burns, and head trauma, than the average Canadian worker. Slaughterhouse workers are also exposed daily to a scale of violence not typically seen by public, resulting in enduring psychological trauma.
For these reasons, we are asking Patton Farms Inc. to close all animal farm & slaughter operations, and transition to an entirely plant-based food system, for the safety and sustainability of our community.
