Stop Shark Baiting off Western Australian Beaches

This petition had 66 supporters

wa-government@dpc.wa.gov.auWestern Australia Premier Colin Barnett and fisheries minister Troy Buswell have revealed that professional fisherman will be allowed to kill threatened shark species that ventured into designated "kill zones".

They have also announced that drum lines with a baited hook designed to "attract sharks" will be deployed one kilometre off beaches and surf breaks in a bid to capture sharks.

Pressing demand for a shark cull has come from tourism groups and businessmen who are placing dollars before common sense.

Western Australians for Shark Conservation founder Ross Weir told reporters he had provided the premier with feedback from the top five great white shark experts in the world - "All of which have advised him that this approach is not going to have any positive benefit for beachgoers or the sharks''.

Mr Weir said great whites were vulnerable to extinction and could be wiped out in the next 20 years if action was not taken now to protect them.
