Over the past couple weeks, Colgate Students have slowly been contacted by faculty about the status of their classes, and some found information on the portal about whether their classes are fully online, remote, or a hybrid of both. Many students learned that their classes were fully online, and by the time that word had spread the University removed the section of the portal disclosing whether their classes are online or in person.

On July 29th, President Casey and V.P. Dean McLoughlin sent an email detailing the structure for arrival, indicating that if students chose to, they could return to campus, contingent on a mandatory quarantine for the first two weeks after arrival and repeated tested there after. This plan would have been viable in thought, but the fact that this information was disclosed three days before tuition was due (which was also increased from last year) left many families no choice but to financially commit to an uncertain future.

Since then, students have not only found out that many of their classes are online, but also have been very worried about the accountability of students arriving. There has been little to no transparency about the thoughts and feelings of the faculty and community members, which is worrying as they are in theory the most at risk.

Because many students have now decided not to come back to campus due to their classes being online, it seems not only foolish but also selfish for the rest of the students to be asked to come back to in person classes for a very small amount of time. Students are supposed to arrive August 23th-25th, and then leave again November 20th to begin virtual instruction. This is a total of 10 weeks of being in person to then leave again. Although rigorous testing is planned to occur, there will always be a chance for slip up.

We, signed below, feel that students should NOT be asked to return for any in person classes and move into the Hamilton Community UNLESS they are currently not safe, secure, or able to stay in their home cities. Those who do move in, including people living off campus, NEED to have equal access to delivered meals during the mandatory quarantine, cleaning and health supplies such as masks, and serious repercussions if found breaking quarantine (sending off campus students back on campus is not only counter productive, but illegal due to signed leases). Colgate, please consider that 44% of the Hamilton Community earns less than $50k per year, and 18.1% fall below the poverty line, more than 50% higher than the national average of 11.8%. Further more, the towns population is only 3,860. Even if only 30% of the colgate students come back, that is close to 900 students returning from all over the world to a community of only 3,860. That is 990 chances for someone to bring the virus to a low income, tightly bonded community with only one hospital facility within a 40 mile radius. The students will not only probably bring the virus, but will also likely oversaturate the health care system that the local community members depend on.

Please reconsider this decision Colgate, it could literally cost lives.
