Change the Dress Code at Coleman High School Coleman, Texas #Savethecurls
Why this petition matters
My son Lukas is currently in In School Suspension at Coleman High School because of his refusal to cut his hair. He is currently sporting a Manbun that keeps the hair out of his face, above his ears, and off his collar. He has been told he will be in continual ISS until he cuts his hair. Lukas is an honor student that takes all honors courses and keeping him in ISS for an extend period will eventually begin to affect the quality of his education and harm his self esteem should this isolation continue. I am hoping current, past, and present students of Coleman High School will join me in supporting Lukas and help promote change at Coleman High School to encourage a more positive and up to date Dress Code. Please note when you sign how you are connected to Coleman, Coleman High School, or us as a family.
This year's dress code is gender biased and should be amended to be more with the current times and inclusive of all no matter their gender, race, religion, or sexual preference. This policy was posted on a public web page eight days before school started and reverts back to a policy from mid-2000. Please see the copy below taken directly from the student handbook.
The following is the Dress Code as per the Coleman High School Student Handbook.
Dress and Grooming
The district’s dress code teaches grooming and hygiene, prevents disruption, and minimizes safety hazards. Students and parents may determine a student’s personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following:
Specific Dress Code Rules:
* Boys’ hair should be neat, clean, and well groomed. Boys’ hair should not extend below the eyebrows in front or below the top of the ear on the sides. Hair should not extend below the top of the collar.
* No ponytails are allowed for males. Sideburns may not extend below the ear. Facial hair is not permitted; must be clean shaven.
* Girls’ hair should be neat, clean, and well groomed, and should not be worn over the eyebrows.
* Hair must have a natural tint. Any hair that is not a natural tint will need to be fixed before coming to school.
* No line designs will be allowed to be cut into the hair or eyebrows.
* Students, boys and girls, will not be allowed to wear rings, studs, or gauges in their tongues, eyebrows, noses, or other exposed body parts with the exception of girls wearing earrings.
There will be a maximum of two earrings per ear. Other jewelry worn in conjunction with body piercing is not allowed. Spiked jewelry is not allowed. Chains and oversized decorative zippers
are not allowed.
* Students will not be permitted to have visible tattoos. Existing tattoos will be covered.
* Students may not wear tee shirts that have the sides cut out, or shirts that do not reach the tops of pants or skirts. Undergarments must be worn at all times and the undergarments should not be visible.
* No midriff type shirts or crop tops will be permitted. In other words, if you raise your arms and your midsection shows, it is a midriff type. Tops with narrow straps or spaghetti straps, backless tops, or underwear type shirts will not be allowed. No low cut tops or dresses will be allowed.
* Students will not wear slogan buttons or clothing with inappropriate or suggestive slogans or advertising on it. (An example would be an alcoholic beverage advertisement).
* Students are not to wear hats, bandanas, hair rollers, caps, dark glasses, or gloves indoors. EXCEPTION: Caps may be worn in the gymnasium during after-school athletic events only. The bill of the cap must be worn forward.
* Shorts may be worn provided they are at least finger-tip length.
* All dresses and skirts must be no shorter than 3 inches above the knee. All slits in skirts or dresses may be worn provided the slit is no greater than 3 inches above the knee.
* Any legging or stretch type material pants will not be permitted unless covered by an acceptable outer garment. The outer garment must completely cover buttocks.
*Jeans/pants that have fashionable tears or slashes in them are permissible as long as the tears or slashes are below fingertip length or have some type of garment under the pant where skin doesn’t show through tear. No one will be allowed to wear saggy pants.
* Students will not be permitted to wear contacts in eyes that are not a natural color. For example, cat eye or white out contacts are not allowed.
* Face paint and spirit tattoos will be limited to the extent that will prevent disruption of the learning environment (principal discretion will determine the dates this will be allowed).
Any other item that may be considered disruptive or inappropriate is left to the discretion of the designated building administrator(s).
If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school. If not corrected, the student may be assigned to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day, until the problem is corrected, or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school. Repeated offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
