Dear CIV,

  In these uncertain times, how a business conducts itself during this pandemic will define its reputation not just for today but for years to come.  Having just received your email, we wish to state that offering such a small discount is unacceptable. Our reasons are simple.  We contracted CIV to provide education full time for our children and that is not happening.  

  From our perspective, the premises are unusable to us and the school is closed.  That means you need to cut your cost base and put things into hibernation mode until the crisis is over, and the school reopens, like any other business.  If you haven’t done this, please explain why not since the government will reimburse a significant portion of employee salaries. Since students and faculty are not coming to school, payments for utilities like water, electricity, gas and cleaning etc should now be minimal.   If this is true, your savings from the above measures would be greater than the discounts offered.  This is not acceptable.

  We sincerely support and appreciate the efforts of the fantastic teachers who are trying their best in difficult times.  That said, they are not experienced in teaching remotely and several emails a day and a few Zoom calls is clearly not enough. They also have families at home they need to support.  This means they are unable to support their students as much as they would like. It’s also clear to everyone that remote teaching is not comparable to being in-class and should not be billed the same. 

  Many of your student’s parents are currently out of work or own businesses that don’t have the revenue coming in they expected.  They run restaurants, bars, hotels or work in fields severely affected by this pandemic. Tourism is the main industry of the Algarve, it should come as no surprise that this impacts your student's parents significantly. These parents simply can’t afford to even pay the discounted rate when they have no revenue coming in themselves.  This begs the question how CIV can justify charging so much when they too are shut down.

  We now spend the bulk of our days doing the teaching that we pay CIV to do.  In our own homes at our own expense. It’s very simple, CIV is a business like any other. If a business doesn’t  provide the service we’re paying for, they can't expect to get paid. In order for you to ask for 80% of the fee, you have to explain in writing how you’re providing 80% of the service.  We believe paying 20% of the total rate for April and beyond is generous and we should pay retrospectively the same for March.  We would consider increasing that amount if you were suitably able to demonstrate that you were able to provide better education for our children. 

  With new schools opening soon, many are looking at how you handle this and debating their next move.  CIV needs to ask themselves, how do you want to be perceived in the long term? Do you want to be seen as a business that will do anything and everything to justify making a profit during a pandemic, or do you want to be seen as a business that supports its community in its time of need.  The choice is yours.

Caro CIV,

Nestes tempos de incerteza, a forma pela qual uma empresa conduz seus negócios afetará sua reputação nos próximos anos. Depois de receber sua carta, nós, os pais, estamos a declarar que o desconto por vós sugerido de 20% é inaceitável. Nossas razões são simples. Contratamos o CIV para fornecer educação em tempo integral para nossos filhos e isso não está acontecendo.

Em nossa perspectiva, a escola está fechada. Isso significa que se faz necessário reduzir sua base de custos e colocar as coisas no modo hibernação até que a crise acabe, e a escola reabra, como qualquer outro negócio. Se não foi o que aconteceu, explique-se. Sabemos que há reembolso do governo para uma grande parte dos salários dos funcionários. Utilidades como água, eletricidade, gás etc. devem agora ser mínimos. As instalações em si são inutilizáveis para nós.

Enquanto isso, sinceramente apoiamos e agradecemos os esforços dos professores que estão a dedicar-se ao máximo em tempos difíceis. Dito isso, eles não têm experiência em ensinar remotamente e vários e-mails por dia e algumas chamadas pela plataforma Zoom claramente não são suficientes. Os professores também têm famílias em casa, que logicamente precisam também de apoio. Isso significa que eles são incapazes de apoiar seus alunos o quanto eles gostariam. É claro que o ensino remoto não é comparável a estar em sala de aula.

Atualmente, muitos dos pais de seus alunos estão sem trabalho ou possuem empresas e não têm a receita esperada. Eles administram restaurantes, bares ou trabalham em campos severamente afetados por essa pandemia. Esses pais simplesmente não podem arcar com 80% do valor total sem que a receita apareça. Isso levanta a questão de como o CIV pode justificar tal cobrança enquanto o colégio também permanece fechado.

Agora, passamos a maior parte de nossos dias ensinando o que pagamos ao CIV. Em nossas próprias casas, às nossas próprias custas. É muito simples, e nesse aspecto o CIV é um negócio como outro qualquer. Se uma empresa não fornece o serviço pelo qual estamos pagando, ela não pode esperar receber o pagamento. Para solicitar os 80%, deve-se então explicar por escrito como está a fornecer 80% do serviço. Acreditamos que pagar 20% do total para abril está muito além do generoso, e que o mesmo se aplica retrospectivamente para o mês de março. Reconsideraríamos o valor caso demonstrasse-nos adequadamente que era capaz de fornecer um melhor serviço durante esse período difícil para todos.

Com a abertura de novas escolas em breve, muitos pais estão observando como a instituição lida com essas questões e avaliando os próximos passos. O CIV precisa questionar-se: como desejamos ser reconhecidos a longo prazo? Como um negócio que faz tudo e qualquer coisa para justificar o lucro durante uma pandemia, ou se deseja ser visto como um conjunto que apoia sua comunidade em momentos de necessidade? A escolha é vossa.
