SIGN THIS PETITION TO ABOLISH SEXIST UNIFORMS

For years girls have been made to wear skirts with no genuine explanation other than “it’s just the way things are”. The time for us to accept this excuse is over. In the year of 2020 girls should have the option to choose between a skirt or trousers. The skirt itself is not the issue , it’s the fact that we do not have access to a gender neutral uniform, whereas boys are handed this simply because they are boys. We are aware that our school’s management is working to be progressive yet we cannot overlook this.

This restriction is sexist to girls, it is harmful to LGBT+ students, and is overall old-fashioned and unnecessary. Why should we be forced to constantly think about how we sit, to hold our skirts down on a windy day for fear of being “indecent”, to be told to “just wear tights” when it’s cold and to “just wear shorts” in answer to our worries of exposure?

The policy is a huge contradiction to how our school claims to be accepting of trans students. How can you wave the flag but have specific gender conforming uniforms? We should not stand for this pretence. Grey trousers won’t hinder our education in any way. In fact, our mental well-being, which the school preaches about, will be significantly improved.

Please sign this petition to allow the students in Coláiste Bhríde Carnew access to a uniform policy they can stand behind. Together we may make a difference. We feel this is the best way to make a completely peaceful and respectful change.
