When these plastic rings are thrown out, they end up in our landfills, and remain there for 1000 years until they biodegrade. However, many of these rings end up in our ocean instead of the landfill.

Every single day, more and more plastic rings are ending up in our oceans because companies like Coca-Cola aren't switching to the most environmentally friendly packaging option. As a result, marine animals are dying at a faster rate because they fail to distinguish the difference between their food and plastic.

Instead of using plastic to hold aluminum cans together, companies can use glue, a product that breaks down faster than plastic, or a more environmentally friendly product that can be edible for animals if it ends up in our ocean.

"A vast swarth of the Pacific, twice the size of Texas, is full of a plastic stew that is entering the food chain.

Captain Charles Moore found his life's purpose in a nightmare. Unfortunately, he was awake at the time, and 800 miles north of Hawaii in the Pacfic Ocean.

It happened on August 3, 1997, a lovely day, at least in the beginning: Sunny. Little wind. Water, the color of sapphires.

It began with a line of plastic bags ghosting the surface, followed by an ugly tangle of junk: nets and ropes and bottles, motor-oil jugs and cracked bath toys, a mangled tarp. Tires. A traffic cone. Moore could not believe his eyes."
