Mawella Tourism Association started this petition to Coast Conservation Dept (Director General) and

A 300-metre fishing boat anchorage and two offshore 60m long breakwaters are to be constructed by the Ceylon Fishery Harbours Corporation at a cost of approximately LKR 350 million at Mawella Beach near Tangalle, Sri Lanka. The foundation laying ceremony is on 6th December 2020.

The purpose is for boats that are docked at the Kudawella fisheries harbour just 2km away to anchor nearer the fisherman's homes. Does the increased convenience warrant the destruction of the beach and tourism which is also the future for fisher families?

Mawella is one of the top 5 beaches in Sri Lanka, 2km long and pristine, ideally suited for high-end tourism with white sand beaches and a high level of biodiversity. This is one of the few beaches on the Southern Coast which is calm and swimmable year-round.

The devastation of this important tourism & biodiversity asset is very likely. The unpredictable impact of the movement of sand due to the introduction of foreign structures has been witnessed in the destruction of the once beautiful Unawatuna Bay. The recent intervention on the Mount Lavinia beach outlines the futility of humankind trying to control nature.

A proper assessment of impact has not been done, consulting tourism stakeholders. A formal Environmental Impact Assessment [EIA] is critical and that is what we demand so that responsible decisions can be taken.

The natural world is changing. And we are totally dependent on that world. It provides our food, water and air. It is the most precious thing we have and we need to defend it.” David Attenborough
