Brett S started this petition to CNN and

For far too long, the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) has had complete control on who can participate in the Presidential Debates. The CPD states in their mission statement that its "primary purpose is to sponsor and produce the quadrennial general election debates...The organization, which is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) corporation, sponsored all of the general election presidential debates [since] 1988." The CPD states it is "nonpartisan" however they levy unrealistic expectations on third party candidates (given how underfunded they compared to the DNC and GOP) if they want any sort of chance of participating in the debates...the CPD is not nonpartisan, it is bipartisan! It is disgusting that a nonprofit organization has enough power to decide which candidates the American Citizens will listen to in a debate. It is completely fascist of that organization to not allow third party candidates to participate in these debates and not allow American Citizens access on a national stage to all of their options available.

I want the following legislation passed:

  • Legislation that prevents nonprofit organizations from organizing events and debates for federal elections
  • Legislation to grant the Federal Election Commission new powers to officially organize and coordinate the presidential debates allowing all prospective third party candidates to participate. Each candidate is required to achieve minimum 3% in order to participate in the debates. Each successive debate drops the candidate with the lowest rating until there 3 candidates left.
  • Legislation that marks Election Day a Federal Holiday and imposes severe punishment against corporations, businesses, and individuals if they prevent employees from leaving work to vote.

I also want the big media corporations to end their bipartisan only coverage during the election season. They only ever give air time to DNC and GOP officials and candidates, and don't advocate for third party candidacy and participation in federal debates. Third party candidates do not have the funding of the DNC and GOP to spend millions of dollars (more than any average American will see in 10 lifetimes) on television/commercial/network and social media ads.

I have seen other petitions on whitehouse.gov, however I don't trust the white house or any partisan government official to act upon a petition that advocates for third party candidacy and participation in the democratic election process.

Edit 1: at a minimum, candidates who are on the ballot in all 50 states should be allowed in presidential debates.
