Carnegie Mellon University, as a leading academic institution, has demonstrated its environmental concern. The Green Practices Committee pioneers initiatives that further the environmental research and develop policies on campus. We partake in competitions like RecycleMania and host conferences like Energy Week and Sustainability Weekend.
However, these are opportunities that only interested individuals partake in. We need more visibility of environmental initiatives throughout all of campus. This raises the awareness and helps to thread environmental practices in people’s day to day habits.
At the end of the day in iNoodle, piles of compostable containers lay in the trash cans despite the implementation of compost bins. People are unaware of the items that are compostable, and unaware that it is available as an option at this location. Trash is diverted into composting bins and compostable items are being sent to the landfill.
People do not recognize composting as an option if it is only in a few locations. Composting locations are limited and inconvenient. In the University Center, it is only available in the basement, while all most dining facilities are on the second floor. People that want to compost have difficulty doing so. For example, Resnik has compostable containers but no compost bins. People do not have an understanding of what items are compostable. We believe that composting bins at all campus locations will improve waste diversion and campus awareness of composting. If you believe this too, please sign our petition.
