Dear borrowers,

It's 'NSW Libraries Week'... and yet Waterloo Library is facing the very real threat of closure. If we don’t speak up now, it will be gone before spring has sprung. Your Library want their books back so they can be relocated to Green Square.

This library is a vital community service and public space, a real lifeline and respite for the diverse community of Waterloo. An ageing community and many families need immediate access to their local Library.

Closing Waterloo Library creates several barriers to accessing library services for local people. It displaces the Koori collection from Waterloo-Redfern where indigenous knowledge matters most. The Russian and Chinese collections should also be located in the place those communities call home. Many people who can’t afford home internet access and computers need Waterloo Library to survive the onslaught of ‘digital-by-default’ government.

Waterloo is radically changing through state government sanctioned redevelopment. No library means no past and no future. The people of Waterloo deserve a local library. We don’t doubt that the new Green Square Library will be a wonderful subterranean basement for the incoming Green Square inhabitants.

However, Clover Moore and her Council have a vital role in defending rather than orchestrating the decline of public space. At a time where everything seems to come down to the bottom line. At a time when developers have their pick of public assets to privatise.

This move is deeply off-point for a ‘City of Villages’ approach to urban governance. Also out of order is the complete absence of community consultation on the closure announcement. Waterloo has already suffered a systematic stripping of essential civic resources: Rachel Forster Hospital, Redfern Primary School, Redfern Court House, Waterloo Public School, the list goes on. The much utilised Redfern Neighbourhood Centre is also facing closure at the same time!

PLEASE HELP US SAVE OUR LOCAL LIBRARY!!!

ENSURE WE ARE HEARD, AND THAT ONE ‘CULTURAL PRECINCT’ IS NOT SACRIFICED FOR A MORE LUCRATIVE ONE!
