This is really unfortunate that Kolkata Police Commissioner put a ban on bicycling in major city areas at the time when the whole world is promoting green transportation to sustain the environment.
India too has undergone a nation wide effort to encourage green transport. Cycling initiative targets air pollution and helps reduce traffic jams. India's polluted air was linked to 1.67 million deaths in 2019. From bike sharing to cycle lanes, there are many initiatives underway. COVID-19 boosted bike sales and interest in cycling in the country. COVID-19 also does all the wrong things for public transport, with safe distancing not really possible.
Apart from sustainability issues and maintaining social distancing, lot of people depend on bicycles to travel short distances to sustain their livelihood. The restriction will inconvenience them. Moreover, bicycles are being promoted worldwide as the cleanest mode of transport. Bicycles are the most climate resilient mode of transport.
This Tuglak move will defeat the enthusiasm noticed for cycling in the past few months.
We as a part of cycling community, appeal to concern authorities to revoke the ban with immediate effect and provide convenient and safe road infrastructure for the cyclist to sustain their livelihood and save the environment.
