Instead of allowing a Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) to meet on campus as a non-extra curricular club that would help create a safe and welcoming environment for any student, Clovis High School let the school board vote to remove all student clubs on April 26, 2011.
Clovis High School student, Steven De Los Santos, wanted to start the GSA as a positive and safe environment for all students on campus. The student club only needs the approval of the school principal in order to meet on campus as a student-initiated club.
Tell the Clovis School Board and Superintendent Terry Murray to allow the GSA on campus -- and allowing access to all clubs.
By not allowing equal access to all student clubs on campus as outlined in the Equal Access Act of 1984, you are sending a message that hate and intolerance are acceptable and that all students are not equal or safe at Clovis High School and the Clovis Municipal School District.
I urge you today to stand up against intolerance and hate to create safe spaces for all students building on the commitment that Clovis Municipal School District has to ensuring every student is valued as a member of the campus.
I request that you address these concerns on or before Friday, May 6, 2011.
