Within the last week the nation's pediatricians have publicly released a strong statement favoring FULL-TIME IN-PERSON learning this fall. The American Academy of Pediatrics' (AAP) guidance advocates that all policy considerations for the coming school year should start with a goal of having students physically present in school.

Medical experts have routinely argued that schools are fundamental to child and adolescent development and well-being. In addition, there is already evidence of the negative impacts on children due to the 2020 spring school closures.

the AAP argues that for elementary students specifically, desks may be placed 3-6 feet apart if feasible, but if this strategy reduces the amount of time children are present in school, HARM MAY OUTWEIGH POTENTIAL BENEFITS. The “hybrid schedule” already proposed by CPSD WILL reduce the amount of time our children will be present in school. Therefore, the district has proposed a plan that may do more harm than good for CPSD students.

Over the last several months there is increasing evidence that transmission of COVID-19 by young children is uncommon. Although children and adolescents play a significant role in the spread of other respiratory viruses such as influenza, this does NOT appear to be the case with COVID-19. Children and adolescents are less likely to be symptomatic and less likely to have severe disease from COVID-19. They are also less likely to become infected and/or to spread COVID-19.

The AAP argues that based on the nation's experience this spring, remote learning is likely to result in severe learning loss and increased social isolation. Keeping children isolated leads to serious social and emotional health issues - specifically child and adolescent physical or sexual abuse, substance use, depression, and suicidal ideation. It is argued that these impacts will more severely affect minority children, as well as low-income children and those with learning disabilities. School closures impact food security and physical activity for children, in addition to social and emotional health. Continued isolation of our children puts them at risk for significant increases in morbidity and mortality.

High quality in-school learning CAN be accomplished while keeping adults safe (through masking and distancing from each other), and protecting the medically fragile students in our district through appropriate accommodations.

Our children are not an at-risk population for COVID-19. They are at a much higher risk for negative outcomes due to the isolated and stressful nature of at-home learning. Distance learning was a dismal failure last spring. It strained families and left our children with a subpar education. They deserve to be in school. The data does NOT support the continued social isolation of children in the name of COVID-19. The stakes are too high to allow evidence and facts to be buried by misguided fear and feelings.

Please sign this petition urging the superintendent of Clover Park Schools to open schools full-time for the 2020-2021 school year.
