The City of Edmonton is proposing to close down Hawrelak park for 3 years in order to complete renovations. This proposed closure would be devastating for many people who utilize the many amenities and activities the park offers. Some activities include but are not limited to, mountain biking, walking, running, canoeing and paddle boating, as well as skiing and skating in the winter time. If the park is closed numerous negative health effects will arise. These effects include but are not limited to, worsened mental health as well as lower level of cardiovascular endurance. People could also be at higher risk of diseases such as diabetes. Limiting park access for the purpose of city construction does not improve the citizen's access to public resources. The City of Edmonton should ensure that access is maintained in a reasonable fashion for our citizens to continue to use this important resource. Complete closure should not be the only option!
