Close the Overlake School to Protect Students from COVID-19
Why this petition matters
The Coronavirus is a major problem currently affecting the world. In Washington State, there are 13 confirmed cases of Coronavirus and 2 deaths, but there could be many people who currently have the virus but are not displaying the symptoms yet. This virus could spread throughout the state, infecting and potentially killing more people. For this reason, schools in Washington State, especially in King County should take safety measures to protect their students and the general public.
Since the first two deaths due to Coronavirus in the US occurred in Kirkland, Washington, where many of the students attending The Overlake School reside. Additionally, since the symptoms of Coronavirus take two weeks to manifest, members of the Overlake community may already have it, and might have unknowingly spread it to other students at school. Therefore, as a precaution to prevent any further cases form occurring in the King County area, and to protect Overlake students and their families, The Overlake School should be shut down until the risk of contracting Coronavirus has significantly decreased. The people most likely to die from the Coronavirus are those who are 50+ years old. Both of my parents are in their 50s, so personally I would not want to see any members of my family harmed due to someone at my school having the disease. We should not even take a chance and let school remain open, because the virus could potentially be spreading to hundreds more people.
