Large psychiatric asylums institutionalise patients. The 'prison' culture of these centres are counter therapeutic. Human rights are often violated in these places. Many patients face physical and emotional violence. Asylums perpetuate stigma towards mental illness.
In modern psychiatry, large asylums have no role. Individuals with mental illness can be treated in the community closer to their homes.
We request you to appoint a commission to formulate a plan to close down the existing psychiatric asylums and to articulate a modernisation agenda for our mental health serives with an emphasis on integrated care in the community.
