The outbreak of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is spreading globally. Despite cases tied to the Diamond Princess cruise ship, there have been 13 cases confirmed in the Bay Area, including 11 in Santa Clara, 1 in Solano County, 1 in Alameda (Berkeley), and 1 in Contra Costa. Up to now, the U.S. has 128 cases confirmed and 9 deaths. Among the world, the total number of cases has gone beyond 90,440, and more than 3,120 people have lost their lives.

While there is no case reported in the DVC community currently, the threat is unignorable. People who have had contact with the Contra Costa patient are not yet identified, which indicates unknown infections and the virus's further spreading. The virus may lay latent in the body for two weeks or more before symptoms appear. The proximity in classrooms, the cafeteria, and other crowded areas will increase our DVC students' risk of infection.

We are here asking Susan Lamb, the president of Diablo Valley College and other administrators to take the initiative and close the campus to protect students and the community from the further spread of COVID-19. Online classes can be applied to minimize the influence on academics. The decision is uneasy to make, but our health is second to none.
