The historic Green Lane path and ancient hedgerow in Heaton Norris, Stockport is under threat.

We the undersigned demand that Stockport Council abandons plans to develop the Green Lane path into a two lane cycleway with street lighting.

We believe the proposed changes will turn a tranquil haven into an urban highway for cyclists, with losses to amenity, wildlife habitat, and ecology. The steep bank will create a fast track for cyclists heading downhill, endangering pedestrians. Lighting will damage wildlife, and the removal of historic hedgerow will degrade the ecology of this important local amenity.

We also argue that the proposed cycleway is not needed. The path emerges onto a busy industrial estate with no cycle lane provision, and the existing TPT Route 62 which runs parallel, has better connections to cycling infrastructure.

The real value of this path is in terms of wildlife, health, and wellbeing, and as the last piece of historic Green Lane. The council's plan will further diminish the limited access to green space of residents in this high density urban area, which borders industrial estates and the M60 motorway.

It's taken less than 200 years to industrialise this landscape, and this path is a significant link with our ancient rural past. Let's preserve it!
