Remove Skin Lightening Ad In Grove Hall!!!

This petition made change with 506 supporters!

This message is a call to action for Boston community members of color and for city officials requesting the immediate removal of a billboard that poses a threat to the esteem and mental security of youth and adults residing in Boston’s communities of color. A growing body of Mattapan, Dorchester and Roxbury community members have convened and are seeking the removal of the “Carotis” brand, skin lightening advertisement posted on the "Clear Channel" billboard #14640 located at the intersection of Blue Hill Avenue and Warren Street.  The consensus amongst us is that this advertisement will negatively impact the self-perception and the collective health of Boston’s communities of color.

As invested residents of Mattapan, Roxbury, and Dorchester we strive to make our communities places of safety, not only physically but mentally.  To preserve good mental health;  we find that it is critically important that our community members and children reside in environments that affirm self-acceptance.  We feel that the “Carotis” skin lightening advertisement conflicts with our health preservation efforts as it markets skin lightening to communities where a large portion of members  have dark skin complexions.  Our darker skin and lighter skin community members stand in solidarity in regards to the removal of this billboard and are equally concerned about the negative impressions this ad could have on the minds of our adults, children and youth.

Amongst many of our community members of color there is a growing concern regarding global skin lightening trends being embraced particularly by youth that are insecure with their skin.   We find that said skin lightening trends are the result of and contribute to compromised esteem.   This letter/petition reflects our determination to protect ourselves and our youth from those patterns and to maintain communities where all people of color can feel secure about their skin complexion.  For the reasons stated above we are requesting support from city officials and Boston community members for the immediate removal of the “Carotis” brand, skin lightening advertisement posted on the "Clear Channel" billboard #14640 located at the intersection of Blue Hill Avenue and Warren Street.

PLEASE SUPPORT THIS PETITION:  Take 30 seconds to sign this petition and then take a minute to copy and e-mail this message to Mayor Marty Walsh at mayor@boston.gov.  Please do both so we can send a *clear message to "Clear Channel" and our Mayor and show how much we care about the esteem of our community and that we do not wish to see advertisements like this in the future.
