Clean up Brookhaven towns

Clean up Brookhaven towns
A Facebook page was made a couple of years ago to try to help and clean up our area. Covid then came and squashed any cleanup projects that were planned. Since, it’s just been overwhelming; there is a lack of support. Many Brookhaven county officials have been spoken to and there does not seem to be any encouragement. In fact, they seem to defend the current situation we are living in. “We cannot fine ugly” or getting locks placed on all shopping carts would be “too expensive for the store owners, or very inconvenient for people who don’t have cars and take the bus” are just some of the feedback. I don’t understand why today’s society lacks pride. They lack responsibility. There are no consequences. We are enabling all of this by not doing anything. I simply cannot understand why we cannot give stores notice that they need to put locks on their shopping carts within say two years before getting fined. The locks on the shopping carts will alleviate the problem of finding them all over our streets! As far as people who take the bus, shopping carts have not always been around, yet, somehow people managed to get their food to their homes. It can therefore be done today as well. Stores should be responsible for the upkeep of their property in front of their store. If there is trash on it, they should be responsible to clean it up. If there is graffiti on it, they should be responsible to clean it. And Brookhaven Town should hold them responsible!! The lack of consequences to the store owners and home owners is allowing our town to quickly continue being the dumpsite that it has become. The same goes for homeowners. Keep the property maintained and clean. Clean the trash up. Mow the grass. Driving up and down middle country Road and any residential areas that are maintained by the town of Brookhaven, is an embarrassment. Town officials should not be allowing our towns to get this way, and allowing it to continue. Let’s band together to have the town codes and laws changed so we can get this area cleaned up and be proud of where we live.
