Little Alaska, a neighborhood in Ariel Washington that many visit or reside in for it's natural beauty, tranquility, and peacefulness is currently under threat due to a Surface Mining proposal that would irreversibly change it for generations to come if allowed through. On February 26, 2019, the Board of Cowlitz County Commissioners adopted an Emergency Ordinance, establishing interim controls over Surface Mining. Among their stated reasonings for doing so is that it is “critical to the public safety, livability, and economic viability of rural communities of unincorporated Cowlitz County  to ensure the impacts of existing and future such commercial mining uses which are not compatible, without regulation and mitigation, with the natural environments and rural residential uses”. The board states that they have “the authority to act in the best public interest and an emergency does exist”. Therefore, we are asking that they apply these interim rules and exert their authority over the Chilton Stuart Families LLC’s 31 acre surface mine proposal, which plans to operate in the middle of Little Alaska, unregulated by the County. This intense use project is slated to last anywhere from 30-50 years. It is the County’s opinion that this proposal is “vested” under their grossly ineffective 1995 Surface Mining Ordinance due to their failure to implement their updated Ordinance sooner, despite having drafted it in 2015 and being advised by their own Prosecuting Attorney’s Office to implement it last summer. The people living in this community, the wildlife that migrate through, the tourists that enjoy our scenic highway, those that  recreate on Lake Merwin, and future generations should not have to suffer as a result of the County’s failings. We are asking that we be given the same consideration that the rest of the county is being afforded by having our “health, safety, and general welfare” considered and protected by our County Representatives. The county acknowledges that these types of proposals are NOT compatible with rural residential neighborhoods, yet they are allowing this project to be considered with minimal county oversight. Let's work together to keep surface mining where it belongs: in legitimately REMOTE areas that will NOT have negative impacts on so many! PLEASE sign and ask the County to apply their interim regulations to the Chilton Stuart Families LLC's proposed future land use and help protect Little Alaska!
