The Administration at FFMS has decided to randomly split the incoming 7th graders into two wings without regard for which high school they are going to. Splitting the 7th grade will create the need for a split team in both wings which poses many unnecessary challenges for the teachers of those split teams, specifically as it relates to lesson plans, common core exams and extra help since they will have to teach both 7th and 8th grade classes (see below for further explanation).  Furthermore, they are also potentially separating children who have been together their entire educational career and are also foregoing the opportunity for them to bond with new friends who will be going to the same high school as them.  Finally, the sports programs will be negatively affected as well.

If the FFMS Administration likes the idea of mixing North and South students, then put all 7th graders in one wing and all 8th graders in the other.  This format will satisfy their decision to consolidate teams across North and South in 7th and 8th grade to save money (see below for further explanation). Furthermore, it would eliminate the need for split teams and all the problems that it may cause. Lastly, it will also satisfy all the parents who feel that the continuity of their friends for 13 years (K-12) is more important than the continuity of a principal, dean and guidance counselor for 2 years (7th – 8th).

Many parents have expressed their concerns about the proposed split to Dr. Morton, Mr. Horan and the members of the Board of Education. However, those concerns have not been satisfactorily addressed.  WE NEED TO TAKE A STAND AND FIGHT FOR WHAT WE BELIEVE TO BE IN THE BEST INTEREST OF OUR KIDS.

SPLIT TEAMS – Each of the split teams in C and D wings will have teachers that teach both 7th and 8th grade classes.  This will result in many different problems. The students on a split team will be traveling together most of the day and will not be able to mix with as many students as 7th or 8th graders on other teams.  The English and Math teachers will need to teach two different common core classes and prepare material for two different common core exams. If teachers have enriched classes, this creates even more preps for them and the teachers will be spread too thin. The extra help time will also need to be divided between two separate grade levels. If they adapt the format we are proposing, there will be 5 cohesive one-grade-only teams which provide 100% extra help access. Furthermore, it allows ALL (not just those on full teams) students to have an entire team’s worth of other students they can potentially have in their classes.

COST SAVINGS – The motivating factor for decreasing the teams from 6 to 5 teams is decreasing enrollment. This will also result in cost savings, as it did when the current 6th grade teams decreased from 6 to 5 this year. This is a necessary evil and we accept that. The change we are requesting in this petition will result in the SAME COST SAVINGS, with an even greater sense of community and no split teams.
