Kyle Montgomery started this petition to Clark State President Dr. Jo Alice Blondin and

I, along with my peers at Clark State College, feel strongly that we not only deserve an in-person pinning ceremony and in-person graduation after we complete our respective nursing program, but also that we can accomplish both safely. Nursing students at Clark State College are preparing to graduate in Spring of 2021. The administrators of Clark State College have decided that an in-person pinning ceremony and graduation in Spring of 2021 is not feasible at this time due to Covid-19 and are tentatively planning for a graduation to take place in December 2021. This is despite many other colleges and universities in our area electing to go forth with a well-deserved, in-person celebration of their students’ successes in Spring of 2021.

Locally, we are aware of 4 major universities with much larger student populations that have successfully planned a safe, socially distanced pinning ceremony and graduation for their students that will take place in Spring of 2021: Cedarville University, Ohio State University, University of Dayton and Wright State University. As mentioned previously, each of these universities have significantly larger student populations in their Registered Nursing and Licensed Practical Nursing Cohorts. Each university has elected to split the cohorts into smaller, separate in-person ceremonies. This reflects that there is indeed a way to perform in-person pinning ceremonies, as well as graduations safely to honor the hard work and dedication of their future alumni.

The Nursing Pinning Ceremony and Graduation are both unique experiences that every nursing student looks forward to from the day they decide to pursue their degree. Every single student in Clark State's nursing programs each have a powerful, individual story of perseverance that got them this far. The sacrifices made to be successful in such an intense program are vast and far reaching and the past year has been exceptionally challenging. As we know you are aware, students across the country have been significantly impacted by Covid-19; we have had to make major adjustments from attending traditional lectures and labs to studying remotely and mostly pre-recorded lectures. This was done while sacrificing valuable interactions with our instructors and our peers. However, unique to the nursing program (as well as other health studies), we have continued to show up week after week, alongside Staff RN's at our respective clinical sites, for the patients we currently serve and those that we'll serve in the future. Now we're asking that our administrators show up for us in this way.

We are proposing that the faculty and administration of Clark State College offer an in-person pinning ceremony and graduation for their RN and LPN graduates. Allow us to see our work come to fruition and realize our dream of being pinned as nurses following years of hard work and dedication.  Show up for us as we have continually showed up to represent this school and this nursing program in high regard.
