Dena Lopez started this petition to Superintendent of Clark County School District Dr. Jesus F. Jara

Clark County School District seniors deserve the chance to walk in an in-person commencement ceremony. Depending upon how long it takes before restrictions on social gatherings are lifted, the graduation should be postponed and held later in the summer or held until the summer of 2021 to allow maximum levels of participation.

A virtual ceremony would not be a sufficient alternative. The physical act of gathering together with your classmates, walking across the stage to receive your diploma, getting goosebumps and having your eyes well with tears as “Pomp and Circumstances” plays, and hearing the roars of the crowd are irreplaceable moments. For many of our students, this will be their only chance. This is the culmination of their formal education, and that’s ok! They deserve to be recognized.

Dr. Jara, we the students, parents, teachers, administration and concerned citizens urge you to consider a mandate that the CCSD high schools postpone, however long necessary, the graduation ceremonies rather than cancel or offer a virtual option. Safety is always paramount and we understand and accept that there may be an extended wait. We are prepared to wait. These are significant times for our youth. Don’t you think these young men and women have lost enough?

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for sincerely considering our collective plea.
