The Libertarian Party of Nevada calls upon the Board of Commissioners of Clark County to repeal Clark County Ordinances 12.04.110 and 12.04.200 which require handgun registration by residents of the Clark County and by visitors who stay longer than 60 days in the Clark County.
The Libertarian Party of Nevada considers handgun registration to be a violation of the rights of law-abiding citizens as the second amendment to the Constitution of the United States provides that “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” Handgun registration with the local authorities is a form of infringement.
Furthermore, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, which enforces these ordinances, has a history of abuse by using pistol registration against law-abiding citizens. Simple traffic stops have turned into intense and abusive interrogations of the driver because he or she admits having a pistol in the vehicle. In addition, Police have used the ordinance to confiscate weapons from citizens whose only "crime" is failing to register.
Furthermore, the registration scheme is harmful to citizens who are in danger of this information being made public or suffering from abuse by law enforcement officials. The possibility of this information being made public also would aid criminal elements giving them an indication of whom they should or should not target in the commission of a felony.
Finally, handgun registration has been an abject failure wherever it has been attempted. The law has failed to aid in the resolution of any crime and is an enormous waste of taxpayer dollars costing as much as $2 million dollars annually to administer. In the depressed economy of Southern Nevada this money would better be returned to taxpayers to stimulate the local economy.
For these reasons, the Libertarian Party of Nevada calls upon the citizens of Clark County and other responsible political organizations to join us in this petition calling upon the Clark County Board of Commissioners to repeal immediately Clark County Ordinances 12.04.110 and 12.04.200 which require handgun registration by residents of the county and by visitors who stay longer than 60 days in the county and that all records previously collected as part of this program be destroyed to restore the freedoms and to protect the privacy of law abiding citizens.
