Why this petition matters

For years, individuals and families in Las Vegas have been relying on renting their home or space in their home short-term to make ends meet, pay their mortgage, cover high medical bills, buy life-saving medication, send their kids to college, and create a better quality of life.

Currently there are over 8,000 of these rentals which are listed on platforms like Airbnb and VRBO or HomeAway.  This has been an important economic vehicle for these Nevadans and for the local small business owners where these rentals are located.  Additionally, these rentals bring more tourists to our city who end up spending their vacation dollars on the Strip too thus bringing more economic activity to our State.

State officials have passed Assembly Bill 363 which now prohibits local municipalities from banning these types of short-term rentals and directs them to create rules and regulations to allow them to operate.  However, that Bill sponsored by Assemblywoman Rochelle Nguyen included highly restrictive measures that put the corporate interests of the resort hotel industry over the needs of average Nevadans struggling to make ends meet.  We can do better!

This is why we are urging Clark County Commissioners to do the right thing and stand with struggling Nevadans NOT corporate greed!

The past year has been hard for many.  Nevadan families made sacrifices to help us get us through the pandemic while trying to keep their family stay afloat.  We need to remove economic obstacles for them instead of making it harder for individuals to better themselves.

Supporting this critical source of income for Nevada residents is more important than ever.  All Nevadans should be able to benefit from our important tourism economy - we cannot allow the resort and gaming industries to dictate that every tourist dollar pass through their hands and destroy a thriving home sharing-economy.

The Greater Las Vegas Short-Term Rental Association (GLVSTRA) is a non-profit organization that advocates for Nevadan individuals and families using the home sharing-economy to rent their home to generate an extra source of income.  This income has allowed many of them to save their home, cover high medical costs, put their children through college, retire in peace, and enjoy a better quality of life; all while enhancing their neighborhood, bringing extra customers to the local small businesses in our communities and the Strip.
