Drop The Lawsuit

On November 8, the voters of District 181 voted to pass a referendum that would fund design and construction of a new building for Hinsdale Middle School. Illinois law requires notices of referendum questions to be published no more than 30 days and not less than 10 days before the election. However, some local newspapers published notifications about this ballot issue 33 days before the election because of a clerical error by the DuPage County Election Commission. Because of this technicality, five of our neighbors have filed a lawsuit against District 181 challenging the results of the election because of the notification problem.
It is clear that this mistake would not have changed the result of the election.
Due to this litigation, District 181 is not able to sell bonds to get the funding for this referendum. The school board has shown a willingness to use reserve funds to start this project, but only until the beginning of May. Furthermore, the legislature of Illinois, along with Governor Rauner, has passed a bill which addresses the early notification issue.
The people have spoken. Do not let five self-appointed watchdogs deny them their voice. Drop the lawsuit, and let the will of the people be exercised without further delay and cost.
