Faith Johnson started this petition to Claflin University Administration

I am not the student to take injustice lightly. When there is something wrong, I must speak out. I have a duty to protect the rights of every student and ensure that our voices are heard! I firmly believe that I am not being allowed to run because I have spoken out too many times against administration and pointed out their misconduct. Here is the chain of events that led to this moment:

On Saturday, March 28th, 2020, I was approved to run for Student Government Association President by the Elections Committee. On Tuesday, March 31st, 2020, I received an email from Konist Davis-Johnson informing me that I was unable to participate in the 2020 Spring Elections because I never held a class or legislative position prior to running based on the constitution. I replied promptly notifying her that I was the Sophomore Class Treasurer. She then responded, saying that since I was elected and not appointed I am not eligible. However, the constitution states “Additionally, the candidate for president must have held an elected or appointed position in the executive or legislative branches prior to candidacy.” From this, you can clearly understand that being appointed does not prohibit me from running. She then tried to use an unofficial version of the constitution to endorse her point. She refused to show documentation that legitimized her inaccurate version of the constitution. But let’s say that her version is legit; it only states that I have to have held an elected position, not that I had to have been elected.

Mr. Dillon Beckford then responds, “... you must be elected or appointed to Executive or Legislative Branch prior to candidacy,” which is in the constitution. The constitution also states “If a student has been elected (only) to a class position he or she is eligible to run for an SGA executive board position.” The 2015-2016 SGA President, Andy L. Michell, only held a class position. The 2016-2017 SGA President, Dominique W. Riggins, only held a class position. And the 2019-2020 SGA President, Matthew Coverson-Springs, only held a class position, and he was allowed to run twice. The only president qualified according to their interpretation was Kayla S. Hodges, and she did not run for SGA President.

I only ask that I be treated with the same fairness as any other student running. This is not the administration's first time shutting down a student’s voice, but I will make sure that it is their last!
