Support the communities need for Leicester City weekend burial registration
Covid-19 has disproportionately impacted BAME communities, which means that the Leicester Muslim community has seen a higher level of deaths than normal.
The community therefore needs increased capacity for funerals and we are grateful that the cemeteries have taken the community’s concerns into account and increased capacity of burials.
However burials are impacted by the Leicester City Councils choice to cut weekend burial registrations. The lack of weekend burial registration's is leading to a backlog increasing pressure on Mondays for burial slots, which means some funerals are delayed more than they would have been previously.
At a time when we are seeing more of the BAME community passing than ever, where previously there was capacity to register deaths on the weekend, this service is no longer available. This defies logic as we should be seeking to increase capacity further instead of decreasing it, or at least revert back to pre COVID registrations at the weekends.
