Condemn Hateful and Discriminatory Acts on Campus

All students and staff deserve to feel safe and comfortable and the University should be a welcoming place, which includes the prohibition of discriminatory language and actions.  To support this, the Students Union has resolved to take a zero-tolerance approach to cases of discrimination or harassment.  Unfortunately, University administration has not outwardly supported this policy and has been unwilling to condemn recent actions that directly violate these sentiments.

The University and Vice Chancellor have recently refused to make a statement in response to hateful and discriminatory defacement of posters along the main walkway, which specifically targeted LGBT+ identifying students.  We believe this incident should be treated the same as any racial or religious hate crime, and the University has a responsibility to ensure every student feels safe and not discriminated against on University property.

By refusing to acknowledge or make a statement condemning the acts, the University is in effect condoning such actions and allowing them to occur without repercussion.

We are asking that the University be willing to take a stand against discrimination and hate and publicly release a statement reminding students that any defacement of property or hateful language or acts will not be tolerated, and ensure that any students found responsible for such actions will be held accountable.
