The 3rd year students of Cass Business School, BSc Management and BSc Business Studies are petitioning for the cancellation of the proposed open book alternative assessment/exams due to:

1. Most students are going to struggle to study in an environment that will not allow them to demonstrate their full potential, as well as being negatively impacted by mental or physical illness during this time as well or having to take care of family members.

2. As Libraries have now closed and we have all more or less been forced into our homes and it is safe to say that asking university students to continue working as normal from home is outrageous, Home environments are just not conducive for study and It is unfair to assume that everyone has access to Internet and the necessary resources in their homes. A student’s ability to achieve their best in their most pivotal years of study is now being placed at jeopardy. We are all currently experiencing something so unprecedented that the whole world is in mass panic.
3. Student’s are facing an unprecedented situation in their lives, which has caused us huge distress, especially international students who have had to abandon their lives and run back to their home country leading to dampening of our mental health causing anxiety and even depression.

4. The proposed alternative assessments are only to ‘make do’ and build up credits, it would be unfair to assume it is are the appropriate medium for students to be advanced with considering the class of 2020 will anyhow face the worst job market post graduation seen in a generation due to the Covid-19 crisis.

5. We propose that the class of 2020 is declared graduated upon fulfilling their dissertation requirements and respective coursework assignments, this can be combined with grades of semester 1 for the university to fulfil our credits.

These measures will provide sufficient protection for students in what will be an incredibly difficult job market post graduation and against a crisis, which is being very difficult to face for all students considering the gravity of the situation.
Students have already been tasked with dealing with such a daunting situation; it is only reasonable that the University should do its part to help its students.

Sincerely,

3rd Year Cass Business School Students
