Concerned McKinney Citizens started this petition to City Officials

The homelessness issue has come to the forefront in McKinney with a homeless population currently living on site at the library in historic downtown McKinney.  There is current discussion to put a homeless shelter in the top floor of the Roy and Helen Hall Memorial Library.  Other cities, such as Los Angeles, Seattle, and San Francisco have spent billions of dollars to set up centers to help the homeless and in return these programs have attracted hundreds of thousands of more.  Theses cities have homeless individuals living in their public places and using these public places as both bedrooms and bathrooms.  Homelessness has many causes, but the top two are mental illness and drug addiction.  Shelters do not combat these problems.  If a homeless shelter is provided in downtown McKinney, it could ultimately attract more homeless individuals to the area and destroy the downtown commercial district.  We implore you not to do this.  If a homeless shelter must be provided, please consider an alternative location like the Community Center just off  75 near Town Lake.  The location is isolate from commercial districts and abuts to a large wooded area which already has a homeless encampment.
