Get Jackie Lacey out of office
Why this petition matters
It is time for a change, and this change will have to happen without Jackie Lacey.
In recent years police brutality has made national news. It is unfortunate that it has become a very common issue within our community. Many of our friends and family have been taken from us by the LAPD. With de-escalating a situation being the last thing on their mind, LAPD has taken advantage of its power. We live in a time where it is easier for them to raise a gun and shoot simply because they felt "threatened." It is no secret that police brutality occurs way too often within our Black and Brown communities, but what has Jackie Lacey done to help solve the problem?
Jackie Lacey was the first African American woman to be appointed as the Los Angeles District Attorney on December 3, 2012. As a district attorney, Lacey works for the prosecutor's office, she works alongside law enforcement while investigating alleged crimes within the LA County. Lacey has the duty to bring forward any evidence or criminal charges to a Grand Jury. Jackie Lacey swore into the office to serve and protect the community. "Her top priority is keeping the streets of Los Angeles County safe from violent and dangerous criminals. She is committed to safeguarding our children from human sex traffickers, our seniors from financial elder abuse and our communities from environmental crimes that threaten our health and our livelihood," (Los Angeles District Attorney's Office).
However, over the years, as police brutality became a very common action within the community. Jackie Lacey has done absolutely NOTHING to bring justice to these families who have lost their fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, husbands, wives, ... etc., to police brutality. "Since taking office in 2012, Lacey hasn’t charged a single LAPD officer for a shooting. According to Black Lives Matter LA, over 400 people have been killed by law enforcement or died in custody in the county during Lacey’s tenure. But she has charged only one man, Luke Liu, a deputy in the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, for shooting an unarmed man while on duty," (The Appeal). So I ask you, will you continue to allow the injustice to occur in your community, or will you help be the change? Eight years of Jackie Lacey is too long, she must go. Along with Jackie these LAPD officers were sworn in to protect and serve the community but continue to bring fear instead. Why must we fear the people who suppose to be there to protect us?
