New dog park
New dog park
Yellowknife’s off leash areas are lacking. There is only one fenced in area that is not regularly maintained. The others are not safe for off leash dogs:
-The sandpits has motorized vehicles,
-Fiddler Lagoon road has blasting, intersecting roads with vehicles/transport trucks
-Tin Can Hill is among the safest but still has City vehicles driving to and from the water plant
-There is supposedly a trail behind the Fieldhouse but I have yet to find it. The only trail leads to the Indigenous healing camp. It is not appropriate or respectful for dogs to be running through this camp and area.
None of the above areas are lit except for the dog park, which greatly limits access from October - late March.
I would like to start a petition to get Yellowknife another safe, potentially fenced, off leash dog area, trail or park. Off leash provides great mental and physical stimulation, exercise, and socialization.
I believe providing another designated off leash area will benefit dog owners and dogs alike. It will provide exercise, a sense of community, new recreation opportunities, and gives dogs and owners an opportunity to work on off leash training.
Please help me in proposing this idea to the City of Yellowknife. Past attempts have failed but I would like to continue advocating for it. I pay taxes yet don’t access 90% of what the city offers. I would like to be able to enjoy where my tax dollars go too. Yellowknife is a dog loving community, yet not considered dog friendly in my opinion. Let’s change that!
