On July 2, 2020, the city of Wichita tweeted, "We are excited to confirm a rumor that Amazon will be coming to Wichita." In light of Amazon's many past controversies, we urge the city of Wichita, the city council, and Mayor Brandon Whipple to reconsider allowing an Amazon distribution center in the city. Some of the said controversies include (but are not limited to):

- Efforts to stop union organization. In 2018, a leaked training video told employees, "We do not believe unions are in the best interest of our customers or shareholders or most importantly, our associates." Amazon has fired employees who try to unionize and uses heat maps in stores such as Whole Foods to track pro-union sentiment. Unions push for equal pay and safer working conditions. It speaks volumes that Amazon tries time and time again to beat down these groups.

- Poor working conditions. Delivery and warehouse workers often complain of unfair working conditions. Delivery drivers have said that with the pressure of speedy delivery, they have urinated in plastic bottles and skipped meals, and are often intimidated by supervisors not to discuss their working conditions. Warehouse workers have fainted from exhaustion on warehouse floors. These working conditions drive their employees to extremes, such as starting hunger strikes to bring about change. Those living in Wichita who are seekings jobs can be exposed to these same harsh working conditions, conditions that no citizen of this city should experience.

- Tax avoidance. Amazon is known for avoidance when it comes to corporate taxes, and in Japan, Amazon was ordered to pay the equivalent of $119 million in back corporate taxes. In 2012, Amazon was also under investigation for corporate tax avoidance in the UK, China, Germany, Poland, South Korea, France, Ireland, Singapore, Luxembourg, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. The US - and especially Wichita - should not be compliant in their avoidance to pay corporate taxes.

Again, these issues only touch the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the controversies that Amazon has faced over the years. Allowing the building of a distribution center in Wichita would be a disservice not only to the city itself but also to every individual citizen in the area.
