City of Welland: Investigate Welland Downtown BIA Expenditures

"Last month, Travel Escapes owner, and former board member of the association tasked with guiding and assisting business development in the city core, Mairi Alvarez, appeared before the Business Improvement Area (BIA) board with the support of several other members to voice concerns over how the BIA plans to spend the $105,000 levied from downtown businesses in the years ahead. The concerns have since prompted a meeting with Mayor Frank Campion and city chief administrative officer (CAO) Gary Long.

According to her the culprit is over spending on administrative costs, specifically $53,250 for an executive director position to manage the BIAs various projects and events. With an administration total of $72,710, Alvarez said over 70 per cent of the budget is eaten up when it could be spent on the traditional beautification efforts associated with the BIA."

We the undersigned ask the City of Welland to begin investigating the Welland Downtown BIA and the expenditures of this organization to determine if monies are used in the best interests of all business owners within the catchment area of the BIA, in particular the administrative costs of the BIA.
