LOCO BC started this petition to City of Vancouver Residents

City of Vancouver Council recently voted to shift 2% of taxes from businesses to homeowners over the next 3 years. This shift represents an effort to improve tax fairness. Businesses represent 7% of total properties in the City, consume 23% of City services, and yet bear 42% of the tax burden (2018 data). Residential properties represent 92% of total properties, consume 77% of City services, and yet bear only 55% of the tax burden. Although this measure applies to all businesses, 98% of the business in Vancouver are small (less than 50 employees), and 89% have less than 10 employees. The tax shift recognizes that small and local businesses are struggling for survival, and is one way the City can help them thrive. These businesses keep our communities unique, inclusive, affordable, circulate more revenue than multinationals, and donate more to local causes. The tax shift is expected to cost homeowners an extra $24 in the first year (property value: $1 million). Raising residential taxes is never a politically popular move. Councillors who voted for the shift need to know that City of Vancouver residents support this effort! By signing this petition, you'll send them a signal that you support this shift, and embolden them to deliver much-needed policy measures to support small and local businesses in the future.
